Keeping the Focus

Working from home can be a challenge when trying to keep your focus on 'work'. There's kids, dogs, cats, partners - you name it they all want some part of your 'focus'. Well, how do you put 'work' on that list and be successful at them all?

I've come up with a few things that have helped me keep my focus on work without discounting my other priorities.

  1. Keep your daily routine. Wake up at the same time each day. Go for a run. Take a shower. Get dressed for work - no sweats or pj's. Have breakfast. Whatever your routine, do it everyday.

  2. Take time for silence. I tend to take 10 minutes - without distractions - in the morning to clear my thoughts and plan for the day ahead. I run through my body from my head to my feet and listen for any tensions and remind myself to relax.

  3. Commute to Work. Literally. Take a walk around the house, your yard or block. Then when you get back, viola you've commuted to your work area (without the stress of traffic.

  4. Have a dedicated workspace. If you're going to commute to work, you need to have a 'place' to go to. If possible create a private, away from 'home life' area to work from.

At the end of the day, clean up your workspace, shut down your laptop and commute back home. It's that easy.
